Waxed Jacket - Oilskirt for Women & Men

Waxed Jacket - Oilskirt Men

Our waxed jackets, or oilskins as they're also known, have proved to be almost universally popular for both men and women.

Brief history of the waxed jacket

In the 16th century, Scottish sailors often traveled to the Baltic countries by sailboat to do business. Initially, fish oil was used to waterproof the sails, and given the smell that must have been produced, the results must have been good. Over time, fish oil was replaced by linseed oil, which has a much longer shelf life.
Once a ship's sails were finished, they were used to make waterproof hats and jackets. They had a high level of functionality for users, with the slight drawback that the linseed oil eventually dried and cracked.
However, it was not until the 1930s that paraffin wax was used instead, which had better breathability and, like linseed oil, did not yellow over time. The material became very popular with the British military, who used it for both tents and jackets. Like many of today's historic or even fashionable garments, they have a history and starting point in the military, which always sought high levels of functionality and innovative materials. Nowadays, a hydrocarbon wax is used instead, which performs better and does not emit the same chemical odor.
To make a waxed jacket last as long as possible, it is still recommended to impregnate the jacket periodically, but once a year is probably enough. For this, we recommend our impregnation spray, which is easily applied to your waxed garment.

Men's Waxed Jacket from our own brand Grinda - choose between brown & green

Waxed jackets have long been one of our most popular garments, but many people have struggled to find a version that fits them in sleeve length and is not too wide at the waist.

This eventually led us, in conjunction with other products, to develop our own design, better adapted to our Scandinavian market.

The jackets are of course traditionally made in England, but come in a fit that can be more accurately described as slim fit. Many of the other British brands waxed jackets tend to be very wide in their design, while we have chosen a slightly tighter fit that we are more used to in Scandinavia.

For shooting fit we recommend going up a size.

This waxed jacket is available in both brown and green

Woodsman Oilskirt - Thinner Waxed Jacket

Woodsman is a dark green waxed jacket made in the U.K. and comes from our Scottish favorites Hoggs of Fife. A family business that has been around since 1888, this model is a thinner version of its big brother, the Highland, which also has padding.
The fit is straight which allows for extra layers underneath, or just better freedom of movement if you wear it during a hunt for example. The hood is removable and the neck is easily buttoned in case of wind. The collar of the jacket is made of a soft and nice brown corduroy that nicely breaks off against the very dark green tone of the jacket.
On the link here you can read more about all the specifications and the jacket in general.

Highland Oilskirt - Padded Waxed Jacket

The Highland is a warm lined oilskirt that is perfect for those looking for a waxed jacket to wear during the colder days of winter.
In addition to its lining, the jacket is very similar to the Woodsman above, as it also comes from Hoggs of Fife. Like it, the hood is removable and the jacket has a straight fit. Most of the time it will be fine when you go down a size from your usual. Click here to go directly to the jacket.
